Disneyland sold out on last day of holiday season

Throngs of Disneyland fans eager to see the Merriest Place on Earth decked out for the holidays on the final day of the Christmas season have forced the Anaheim theme parks to hang a “sold out” sign on the front gates.

Disneyland and Disney California Adventure reservations for single day tickets and all annual passholders are unavailable for Monday, Jan. 6 — a rare occurrence in the reservation era of the parks.

“I don’t know if I have ever seen this happen since Disney started making people make park reservations,” Theme Park Mom Life vlogger Kel Warner said on Instagram.

A perfect storm of reasons likely led to Disneyland and DCA running out of reservations:

  • Monday is the final day of the winter holiday season
  • All four Magic Key tiers can get into the parks
  • Daily tickets are relatively inexpensive for this time of year
  • Some school children are still on winter break

Disneyland often closed its gates due to large crowds at least once during the Christmas season in the pre-pandemic era before reservations were required to get into the parks.

Disneyland restricted capacity and required reservations after reopening in April 2021 following the yearlong COVID-19 pandemic closure. Disneyland lifted capacity restrictions in June 2021, but has kept reservation requirements in place ever since.

Since then, Disneyland has rarely sold out of daily reservations for the general public. Magic Key reservations are often unavailable at all four price tiers.

“Disney loves to tell Magic Keyholders that there’s no reservations and no availability because the parks are busy, but that almost never happens if you’re willing to pay for a single day ticket,” Warner said on Instagram.

The Disneyland calendar shows general public reservations available every day for both parks through the Fourth of July — except for Monday, Jan. 6.

All four tiers of Magic Key reservations are unavailable or blocked out on Jan. 6-12, according to the Disneyland website.
