Daily News track and field: Canyon girls sprinters shine at California Relays

Canyon track and field is once again showcasing some of the fastest girls in Southern California — and in the country.

Mikaela Warr won a state title in the 100 meters last season and is now running at San Diego State, making way for the next generation of Canyon sprinters. The Cowboys flaunted their speed most recently at the California Relays, which took place Saturday in Long Beach.

Canyon’s 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams saw the most success with the former placing first with a time of 47.11 seconds and the latter placing second at 3:54.42.

Emoni Wright, Alaya Graves-Hogains, Lyric Scott and Lanai Gant ran in the 4×100 and Scott, Graves-Hogains, Gant and Keziah Webster comprised the 4×400.

Canyon’s girls sprint relay teams are among the best in the nation. The 4×100 clocked 46.39 on March 8 at the Redondo Nike Track Festival for the sixth-best time in the country this season. The Cowboys hit 3:50.77 at the same event to become the 10th-fastest 4×400 relay team nationally.

The sprinters experienced individual success as well at the California Relays. Scott, Gant and Graves-Hogains each placed sixth or better in the 400.

Scott, a freshman, set a personal-best 55.63 to win first place and become the No. 3 runner in the state in the event. Gant also set a PR with 56.34 for fourth place and moved into 10th state-wide. Graves-Hogains, a sophomore, placed sixth at 56.54 and is 13th-fastest in California.

Wright won the 100 with a time of 12.21.

On the boys side, Myles McCrory was eighth in the 800 (49.96) and Angela Luna placed eighth in the shot put (42-4).

Taft wins in distance events

The Taft boys and girls distance and middle-distance teams competed well at the California Relays.

Sophomore Isabella Sakalowsky ran the 1,600 meters in 5:34.61 to claim fifth place and sophomore Sage Cowles placed eighth in the 800 at 2:29.30.

Two boys placed in the top 10 in the 800. Ethan Brock was fifth (2:01.72) and Daniel Tochner was sixth (2:03.35).
