Daily News boys basketball: Chatsworth named top seed in City Section Open Division playoffs

The Chatsworth boys basketball team is the No. 1 seed in the Open Division of the CIF L.A. City Section playoffs after winning eight straight games to close out its West Valley League games.

Cleveland, which was named the No. 3 seed in the Open Division, was the only league opponent to beat the Chancellors, which came in an overtime game Jan. 24. Chatsworth avenged that loss by taking down the Cavaliers 71-44 on Feb. 10.

Alijah Arenas leads Chatsworth in scoring with 31.1 points per game and also logs 7.5 rebounds per game, 4.3 assists per game and 2.2 steals per game. The team is hosting a ceremony for the USC commit’s McDonald’s All-American Games jersey presentation Tuesday afternoon.

In addition to Chatsworth and Cleveland, Birmingham will also compete in the Open Division as the No. 3 seed and will travel to second-seeded Westchester to start playoffs. Cleveland will host No. 6 seed George Washington Prep.

Open Division quarterfinals are slated to begin Wednesday at 7 p.m. The first round for all other divisions will be Thursday with games tipping off at 4 p.m.
