THE GAME: Christian Moore drove in two runs and then Kyren Paris drove in three to spark the Angels to a seven-run ninth inning in their 11-5 Cactus League victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday in Scottsdale, Arizona.
PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander Chase Silseth was charged with five runs in 2⅔ innings. Silseth fell apart in the third inning, when he walked three of the first four hitters he faced, allowing a single to the other. He left the bases loaded, and everyone came around to score while minor leaguer Mason Erla was on the mound. Silseth returned to the mound in the fourth, but only got two more outs. Silseth is officially in the running for the No. 5 starter job or a bullpen spot, but he’s now allowed 12 earned runs in 13⅓ innings this spring. He has walked 10 and struck out 15. “It’s very frustrating,” Silseth said. “I think I’m close to getting back to the old Chase. … I think I’m just overthinking, wanting to get back to the taste of greatness I had during that stretch (in 2023).” … Left-hander José Quijada bounced back from a terrible outing to face the minimum hitters. He gave up a single but then got a double play. In his previous outing, Quijada gave up six runs and recorded only one out. “He came out there today like his hair was on fire,” Manager Ron Washington said. “Sometimes in this game you get embarrassed and it’s a wake-up call.” … Right-hander Ben Joyce pitched a perfect inning, with his fastball topping at 102 mph. Joyce has allowed one run in six innings this spring, with 10 strikeouts and three walks.
HITTING REPORT: The ninth-inning rally began with two walks, before Moore doubled. The bases were loaded when Paris doubled. “He might be the MVP of the Cactus League,” Washington quipped about Paris. … Luis Rengifo had his first two hits of the spring, after missing much of the Cactus League schedule because of an illness and a hamstring injury. … Jo Adell was hitless in five at-bats, extending his slump to 0 for 18. Adell is 6 for 47 (.128) this spring. … Tim Anderson had two hits and a stolen base. Anderson, who seems increasingly likely to make the Opening Day roster, is 11 for 40 (.275) this spring. … The Angels scored three runs in the second inning, on a Mickey Moniak single and then three straight doubles from Paris, Matthew Lugo and J.D. Davis.
DEFENSE REPORT: Shortstop Kevin Newman made a diving stop of a ball headed up the middle, saving a run in the first inning.
