Chargers to open 2025 season in Brazil

The Chargers will get their passports stamped again as one of the NFL’s top ambassadors abroad, opening the 2025 season as only the second regular-season game to be played in São Paulo, Brazil.

Their Week 1 opponent on Sept. 5 has yet to be named, as the NFL will return to Corinthians Arena for the second year in a row. The Philadelphia Eagles kicked off their Super Bowl championship season with a 34-29 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 6.

The Chargers, who will be the designated home team and essentially give up a home game at SoFi Stadium, will become the first NFL franchise to play games on five continents and just the fourth to play games in seven countries.

“It’s an honor to once again represent the NFL on an international stage,” Chargers President of Business Operations A.G. Spanos said in a statement.

“It’s also a tremendous opportunity to help grow the game and bring the Chargers brand to millions of sports fans across Brazil and Latin America. One of the great countries of the world, Brazil is as vibrant, dynamic and culturally diverse as anywhere on the planet, and we cannot wait to experience the warmth and passion of its people during our visit.”

The NFL continues to try to grow its game as next season it will also play three games in London and one each in Berlin, Madrid and Dublin.

The Chargers last played outside the U.S. in 2019 when they faced the Kansas City Chiefs in Mexico City in 2019. They also took part in regular-season games in London’s Wembley Stadium in 2018 and 2008.

The team made league history in 1976 when it participated in a preseason game against the St. Louis Cardinals in Tokyo, the first NFL contest played outside North America.

It also played three exhibition games in Berlin, Tokyo and Sydney from 1994-99.

The NFL recently announced the Rams would take part in its first international game for the 2026 regular season in Melbourne, Australia.
