The body found recently in the Angeles National Forest with a bear nearby was that of a 48-year-old hiker who went missing July 14, authorities said.
A sheriff’s helicopter searching for the hiker discovered the body near Bear Creek Trail around 3 p.m. on Friday, sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Viger said, adding there was a bear in the immediate area.
Authorities don’t know if the bear had anything to do with the man’s death or if it came upon the body later or was just nearby.
They are waiting for the medical examiner’s office to determine how the man died.
There was identification found at the scene, Viger said.
Alexander Archila, who lived in Los Angeles County, was last seen around 3 p.m. July 14 in the staging area of the San Gabriel Canyon’s off-highway vehicle area, according to a sheriff’s statement and Viger.
Archila, who went with a relative and friends, later became separated, sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Rodriguez said.
