The Angels added veteran catcher Travis d’Arnaud on a two-year, $12 million deal, giving them a more experienced backup to pair with starter Logan O’Hoppe.
General manager Perry Minasian said the Angels haven’t decided what they will do with Matt Thaiss, the backup catcher last season. They could keep three catchers, because Thaiss can also play first and third, or they could trade him.
D’Arnaud, 35, hit .238 with 15 homers and a .739 OPS in 99 games with the Braves last season.
Minasian, who was in the Braves’ front office when they first acquired d’Arnaud prior to the 2020 season, said he will be an asset to O’Hoppe and the pitching staff.
