Angel City Football Club’s roster makeover continued Friday with the team trading Raquel “Rocky” Rodriguez to Kansas City and forward Katie Johnson announcing her retirement.
Rodriguez, who arrived before last season in a trade with the Portland Thorns, will join the KC Current, with Angel City receiving $100,000 in intra-league transfer funds.
“After speaking with Rocky, it was decided that this trade was a desired outcome,” ACFC Technical Director Mark Wilson said. “We are grateful for her contributions to our season and wish her the best.”
Rodriguez appeared in 20 games last season with Angel City.
“Rocky is a player with great experience who brings even more quality and depth into our midfield group,” Current sporting director and coach Vlatko Andonovski. “Her knowledge of this league and the competition will be beneficial to our team and we’re happy to bring her to Kansas City.”
Johnson, a Monrovia native, is retiring after eight seasons. After a four-year career at USC, Johnson was a first-round pick of the Seattle Reign in the 2017 NWSL draft.
After stops with Sky Blue FC, Chicago Red Stars and San Diego Wave, she joined Angel City on a two-year contract ahead of the 2023 season.
She was out of contract after the recently concluded 2024 and was to become a free agent.
In an Instagram post, Johnson said: “I’m closing this chapter of life with an inner peace. Playing at home in L.A. with my family right by my side will forever hold a special place in my heart.”
