Aluminum pipes come to life and take the center stage at this Cerritos Center show

On this stage aluminum pipes and other industrial materials are the stars of the show. They come to life in a multi-sensory experience that blends theater, music and dance with an out-of-this-world experience.

Yes, this show is all about aluminum creatures and the strange yet entertaining world they inhabit.

“It’s an adventure for kids and their parents that takes them to a bizarre world made entirely of aluminum materials and day-to-day materials such as air conditioner tubes, kitchen foil and more turned into a full world of aluminum, including puppets and animals and oceans”, said Doron Lida, producer and artistic consultant for “The Aluminum Show.”

The Israel-based, world-traveling production, which was launched about 20 years ago, comes to the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts for a one-night performance Jan. 24.

Often compared to better known productions like Stomp and The Blue Man Group, the show was created by artist and dancer Ilan Azriel, who got the inspiration after passing by a factory, Lida explained.

“He walked by an air conditioner factory and he saw this tube, this air conditioner tube and just moved it around and he saw that it looked like it was coming to life in his hands. So he got the idea to see what he could do with that,” he said. “He discovered more and more elements he could add like kitchen foil and pillows and others and incorporated music and dance and then adding a story to the show, and thus came ‘The Aluminum Show,’” Lida said.

The storyline follows an astronaut who travels to a parallel universe and crash lands on a strange planet made entirely of aluminum. There the astronaut discovers quirky characters and creatures who inhabit this world.

“The show incorporates several art fields including dance and acting and puppetry and special effects,” Lida said.

The aluminum serves as both prop and costumes for the show, combining with the music for a metallic, out-of-this-world experience.

“People are usually surprised as to how using these day-to-day elements we can create such a rich world of wonder,” Lida said. “If this show has a message, I think it’s that there is no limit to the imagination and what we can do and create with the simple things of life,” he added.
