Altadena Grocery Outlet, a hub amid the Eaton fire recovery, to host meal giveaway for community

Anyone affected by the Eaton Fire, from those who have lost their homes or been evacuated, to first responders and volunteers, are welcome to a free hot meal distribution from noon to 4 p.m. at Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, 2270 Lake Ave., Altadena.

The spot has been a community hub, even before the Eaton Fire ravaged its neighborhood, said Sandra Valenzuela, who owns the store with her husband Jose.

In the three and a half years since they took over, the couple have played host to community events and helped local groups such as Altadena Search and Rescue and Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department. The Valenzuelas are members of the Altadena Rotary Club, so much of the service club’s philanthropies happen at the site too.

“We’re taking it week by week,” Valenzuela said about reopening plans, which she hopes will be counted in weeks and not longer. “We can’t complain, our building is still standing. We’d love to be able to get back to our community.”

The soda company Jarritos, based in Texas, is footing the bill for the giveaway, gathering local eateries such as Yuca’s in Pasadena, El Patron in Altadena and Pez Cantina in Los Angeles to provide the meals. Other supporters include Latino Restaurants Association, Braven, National Latina Business Women Association Los Angeles, Major Event Trailers, Pez, Pacers Pasadena and Skid Row Running Club.

Jose Valenzuela said for now, they visit their shuttered store, where they’ve allowed nonprofits and agencies such as FEMA, the American Red Cross, ShelterBox and Billy Graham Ministries to set up tents and tables to help wildfie victims.

“When we reopen, there will be a lot of hugs and high-fives,” he said.

For now, breaking bread over tacos and Mexican soda will have to do.
