Yankees Trade Power-Hitting Prospect for Pitcher With 6.18 Career ERA

The New York Yankees acquired right-hander Angel Chivilli from the Colorado Rockies on Monday in exchange for minor league first baseman T.J. Rumfield, per YES Network’s Jack Curry.

The Yanks are betting that a pitcher with a 6.18 career MLB ERA and a 1-5 record in 2025 can salvage his career in the Bronx bullpen.

The move reunites the Yankees with organizational depth at a position where they’ve historically found success turning around struggling arms, though Chivilli’s Major League track record presents one of their steeper reclamation challenges in recent memory.

MLB News: New York Yankees Trade Prospect to Colorado Rockies

Chivilli, 22, posted a 7.06 ERA across 43 appearances for Colorado in 2025, allowing 76 hits and 46 earned runs in 58.2 innings while walking 23 batters and striking out 43. His 1.688 WHIP reflected persistent command issues that plagued him throughout the season with the Rockies.

His 2024 debut season offered slightly more encouragement. Chivilli went 2-3 with a 4.55 ERA in 30 appearances, spanning 31.2 innings with 28 strikeouts against 10 walks. Combined across his two major league seasons, he owns a 3-8 record with a 6.18 ERA over 90.1 innings.

The statistics paint a picture of a pitcher who has struggled to translate minor league success to the majors. Chivilli owns a 3.91 ERA across six minor league seasons, demonstrating the ability to get outs at lower levels while failing to execute against big-league hitters.

Chivilli’s Triple-A Numbers Show Mixed Results

Chivilli’s most recent Triple-A stint with Albuquerque in 2025 showed mixed results. He went 0-1 with a 7.00 ERA in 10 appearances, logging 9.0 innings while striking out 10 batters and walking two.

His 2024 minor league performance across Double-A Hartford and Triple-A Albuquerque combined for a 2.20 ERA in 25 appearances spanning 28.2 innings. He struck out 42 batters while walking 12.

The Yankees’ analytical infrastructure and pitching development system have produced consistent results with similar projects. Whether Chivilli represents another success story or simply organizational depth remains uncertain.

Yankees Part With Rising First Base Prospect

TJ Rumfield, 24, heads to Colorado after posting a .285/.378/.825 slash line in 138 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2025. The Richmond, Virginia native collected 142 hits, including 22 doubles and 16 home runs, while driving in 87 runs.

Rumfield owns a .271 career minor league average across four seasons since the Philadelphia Phillies selected him in the 12th round of the 2021 draft out of Virginia Tech. The Rockies gain a potential first base option with power upside, who was blocked in the Yankees organization by multiple established players.

The trade signals the Yankees’ willingness to sacrifice a position player with legitimate Triple-A production for pitching depth they believe can contribute at the Major League level with proper development and mechanical adjustments.
