The Chicago Cubs received some disastrous news on Tuesday that Cade Horton will undergo season-ending elbow surgery to repair his UCL. Conversely, the New York Yankees are off to the best start in MLB, and might be able to assist the Cubs with their rotation woes by trading Luis Gil to Chicago.
Per Charlie Wright of MLBTradeRumors.com, Luis Gil is set to return to the Yankees’ rotation next week, but if he struggles, New York might be forced to put him on the trade block.
Also, per FanSided’s Jake Elman, the MLB writer urges the Cubs to trade for Yankees’ starter Luis Gil:
“The Yankees can say whatever they want about how much they believe in Gil. I personally wouldnât be shocked if they view him as expendable. Ryan Weathers was awful in spring training and had a disastrous start against the Marlins last weekend, yet all we keep hearing is how great his stuff is and how the Yankees believe they can maximize his talent.”
Elman believes that the Yankees will mishandle the Luis Gil situation as they’ve done with Jasson Dominguez, which will ultimately lead to a trade.

What Would the Yankees Get in Return for Luis Gil?
GettyLuis Gil is in danger of falling out of the Yankees’ rotation early in 2026.
If the Yankees are already being linked to a potential Luis Gil-Cubs trade, what would the Yankees get in return?
You would have to think the Yankees would want another player under team control for several years in return, so Matt Shaw could be the centerpiece of a return package, but New York may also ask for Ben Brown, who is a young reliever with some quality traits as a potential impact arm.
Amid other ‘moves’ the Cubs could make to replace Cade Horton, Elman proposes Chicago could sign a couple top MLB free agents, including top name Lucas Giolito.
As for the Yankees, Gil could seriously be expendable, especially when you consider the likes of Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Clarke Schmidt will be returning soon.

Who Says No to This Hypothetical Trade?

So, who says no to this hypothetical trade idea that would offload Luis Gil to the Chicago Cubs in return for Matt Shaw and Ben Brown?
Honestly, the Cubs might want to hold onto Matt Shaw, which could be enough reason not to trade for Luis Gil.
And it’s important to consider if the Yankees starting Luis Gil in the minors is any indication of their level of trust in the young arm, Chicago’s front office might not be too high on Gil either.
