The New York Yankees have one former Los Angeles Dodgers player, Cody Bellinger, and they had an opportunity to land another this past offseason.
According to a Feb. 28 report from Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Yankees and Boston Red Sox were among the clubs that held trade talks with the Texas Rangers about shortstop Corey Seager.
Tension inside the clubhouse involving Marcus Semien and Seager reportedly grew into noticeable friction, casting a shadow over the Rangers’ $500 million double-play pairing and helping ignite those trade conversations.
Nonetheless, with this news emerging, WFAN’s Tommy Lugauer sounded off on the Yankees’ inability to reportedly land Seager this offseason.
“So I saw a report over the weekend that the Yankees were engaged in trade talks with the Rangers for Corey Seager. Obviously, it did not happen,” Lugauer said on March 2.
“To me, Seager would have been the perfect fit, and he’s a guy who’s been talked about and linked to the Yankees for quite some time because of the swing, because of the short porch, because of his ability and his skill set. Seager is just… and the Yankees feel like that match-made-in-heaven, perfect fit. But it did not go down.
“Now, maybe the asking price was too high, but I think if you have the opportunity, assuming the Rangers were serious on it, and maybe Seager is the guy that’s on the block when we get to the trade deadline, I just don’t understand what the Yankees are doing in terms of their prospects.
What Will the Yankees Do With Spencer Jones?
Moreover, Lugauer questions what the plan is for top prospects like Spencer Jones with Opening Day nearing.
“Do they feel like they are going to carve out an opportunity for Spencer Jones to get playing time at some point? He should be starting the year with the big club, in my opinion,” Lugauer added. “I think he is going to waste away in Triple-A. He strikes out a lot; Aaron Judge did as well. He’s got tremendous power and a ton of upside.”
Aaron Judge Gets Honest About Spencer Jones
Recently, Yankees star Aaron Judge had strong words for the young outfielder, who is looking to impress during spring training in hopes that it’s enough for manager Aaron Boone to consider him for the Opening Day roster.
“He’s a hard worker,” Judge told Meredith Marakovits of YES Network on Feb. 21. “You know, we can see the physical tools, the talent. He’s a monster out there roaming around center field, and then we see, you know, he starts it off for us with that big homer. It’s just impressive to see. In the clubhouse, this guy’s showing up early. He’s putting his work in the cage.
“He’s doing everything on the backfields he needs to do to prepare himself, to give himself a shot to make this team out of camp. So I’m excited for him. He’s got a bright future, and he just wants to learn. I think that’s been the coolest part of seeing him, this guy’s going to be a superstar, but he’s trying to soak in as much as he can from all the guys around him.”
