Yankees Get Notable Anthony Volpe Update Before Rangers Series

The New York Yankees saw their winning streak come to an end Sunday with a 7-4 loss to the Houston Astros. The Rangers series in Texas is next, and the roster picture heading into it has several moving parts worth tracking.

Giancarlo Stanton is most likely headed to the injured list with a calf issue. Jasson Dominguez is being called up from Triple-A to provide coverage. And Anthony Volpe is working his way back from shoulder surgery with a return on the horizon.

Boone Provides Volpe Update

Volpe has been making steady progress on his rehab assignment since October shoulder surgery. The progression has been encouraging.

But manager Aaron Boone identified one area still catching up.

“Still working on timing,” Boone said. “It’s only been two weeks of games. Still getting there…but I know he feels really good and feels ready to contribute too.”

Volpe feels good and believes he is ready to contribute. The Yankees are waiting on is the full offensive rhythm that comes with extended at-bats, something that cannot be rushed after a full offseason of surgical recovery.

Caballero Complicates the Decision

When Volpe went down, the assumption was straightforward. He would recover, return, and reclaim shortstop. José Caballero has made that calculus considerably more complicated.

Boone was asked directly what Volpe’s return would mean for Caballero’s role. He declined to give a firm answer, instead pointing to what Caballero has earned and deferring the bigger question.

“Cabbie is playing at a really high level. Obviously, we think very highly of Anthony too. But those are answers for another day. Bottom line is, Josie has earned a lot of opportunities and has been right in the middle of us winning a lot of games,” Boone said.

Volpe has not lost anything in Boone’s eyes. But he also made clear Caballero’s performance has earned him genuine consideration.

The numbers explain why. Caballero is hitting .377 with a 1.023 OPS, four doubles, three home runs, 10 RBI, and five stolen bases.

Final Word for the Yankees

Nothing in Boone’s update on Volpe suggested a setback. The process is simply not finished. The timing is still catching up, and the Yankees are being patient about it.

What has changed is the context around his return. Caballero has turned a placeholder role into something the Yankees cannot easily reassign. Volpe is back soon. Caballero is not going anywhere quietly.

The Rangers are up next.
