Woman fatally shot in Oakland, man she was in a relationship with later arrested in San Francisco as the suspect, police say

OAKLAND — A 24-year-old Santa Rosa woman was fatally shot Thursday night in a motel parking lot near the Estuary and a man police said she was in a dating relationship with was arrested early Friday in San Francisco as the suspect in the killing.

The name of the woman killed has not yet been released.

The name of the suspect, a 25-year-old man, has also not yet been released.

The shooting happened about 8:25 p.m. Thursday in a motel parking lot in the 1800  block of Embarcadero. Police said the suspect was staying at the motel.

Police said they were told the two had been in a dating relationship for six months.

The woman drove to the hotel and the pair were inside the vehicle when they got into an argument.  Police have not yet said what the argument was about, but it ended with the man allegedly shooting her before leaving her body in the parking lot and driving away.  The woman was pronounced deceased at the lot.

Police said that about 2;45 a.m. Friday  the man was spotted driving the woman’s car in San Francisco. San Francisco police briefly pursued the vehicle before it crashed and the man tried to flee on foot but was captured. Police said the man tried to discard  a gun but it was recovered.  It is not yet  known if it is the same gun used in the killing.

The man was brought back to Oakland for questioning and was to be booked at Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of murder.

The killing is the 21st homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. Last year at this time police had investigated 14 homicides in the city.
