Wind advisory affecting the Greater Lake Tahoe Area Thursday

On Wednesday at 2:03 p.m. the National Weather Service released a wind advisory valid for Thursday, Mar. 27 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area.

“Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Gusts up to 80 mph on ridges. Waves 2 to 4 feet on Lake Tahoe,” can be expected according to the NWS Reno NV. “Gusts exceeding 65 mph are possible for areas downwind of the Carson Range such as Mount Rose Highway and Galena.”

“Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve,” according to the NWS. “Now is the time to secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture, decorations, and trash cans before winds increase which could blow these items away. The best thing to do is prepare ahead of time by making sure you have extra food and water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries and/or candles in the event of a power outage. Check lake conditions before heading out and be prepared for a sudden increase in winds and wave heights. Consider postponing boating activities on the lake until a day with less wind.”

Navigating high wind alerts: What each level means

When it comes to high wind alerts, understanding the levels of risk is crucial. The NWS classifies them into three distinct categories:

High wind warning: Take action!

Sustained, strong winds with even stronger gusts are happening. Seek shelter. If you are driving, keep both hands on the wheel and slow down.

Wind advisory: Take action!

Strong winds are occurring but are not so strong as to warrant a High wind warning. Objects that are outdoors should be secured and caution should be taken if driving.

High wind watch: Be prepared!

Sustained, strong winds are possible. Secure loose outdoor items and adjust plans as necessary so you’re not caught outside.
