Wild cat seen roaming through northwest suburban neighborhood and golf course

A wild cat was spotted wandering around a neighborhood and golf course in northwest suburban Hoffman Estates.

The wild cat was identified as a caracal, a medium-sized cat native to Africa and Asia and not common in the United States.

Hoffman Estates police said Monday that the caracal was last seen on Della Drive and the Hilldale Golf Course.

“At this time, it is unknown where the animal came from,” police said.

The cat is an internationally protected endangered species. Police said they are working with local and federal agencies to capture the cat.

Police said if residents encounter the cat, they should use caution and call 911.
