“Rain has started as the Guardians carry a 2-1 lead into the second. Cantillo worked out of a second-and-third, no-out jam after allowing a run and the first three batters to reach,” wrote Guardians MLB.com beat writer Tim Stebbins at 2:37 p.m. CST.
With fans waiting for baseball to begin again, attention quickly turned to what caused the delay and how long the Guardians and White Sox might have to wait before taking the field. Storms rolled into Chicago Sunday afternoon, delaying the first pitch between the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox at Rate Field.
Chicago’s game against Cleveland had been labeled the highest rain delay risk on Sunday’s entire 15-game slate, according to DraftKings Network. Forecasters pegged the odds of precipitation at 70 percent, with the danger window landing squarely on the scheduled 1:10 p.m. CT first pitch.

Rain and Thunderstorms Threaten Rate Field Sunday
The showers and thunderstorms are expected mainly between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. local time, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures were forecast to slide from a high near 84 degrees down to about 78 by late afternoon, with south-southwest wind gusting to 20 mph. The wet weather does not let up once the sun goes down. Showers and storms return between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m., the weather service noted, with totals potentially reaching three-quarters of an inch to a full inch overnight. That timeline raises the odds Sunday’s game, if delayed rather than played on schedule, could still get squeezed in before conditions worsen again. Monday offers little relief, with another 40 percent chance of afternoon storms, so a postponed game would not find a clean makeup window right away.
