The series opener between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Minnesota Twins is delayed due to rain.
The game was at the top of the fourth inning when the game was delayed due to rain, the Twins announced.
St. Louis was leading 3-1 at the time of the delay, but luckily, the delay won’t be for long, as the Twins announced they expect to resume at 8:30 p.m. Central, just minutes after the delay.
“We are expecting to resume play at 8:30,” the Twins wrote on X.
Before the delay, the Cardinals got out to a 3-1 lead. Alec Burleson hit a home run in the top of the first inning, while Byron Buxton tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the first.
Yet, St. Louis then scored twice in the second inning, backed by four singles, to take a 3-1 lead in the series opener.
Buxton Continuing Hot Streak for Twins
Although the Twins are trailing 3-1 at the time of the delay, Buxton is continuing to hit the ball well.
The star outfielder hit his 21st home run of the season. Underdog MLB noted a unique stat that involves Buxton and how well he’s started seasons.
“Twins with multiple seasons of 20+ HR in their first 60 games of a season: Harmon Killebrew x3 Byron Buxton x2,” the account wrote on X.
Buxton, meanwhile, now has four home runs in his past six games, as he helped Minnesota to a 6-4 win over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.
“Credit to him. He just continues to do really good things for us this year. I mean, he’s one of the premier players in the American League,” Twins manager Derek Shelton said about Buxton.
Buxton, however, felt like he’s struggled to hit with runners in scoring position, so he’s put an emphasis on getting better.
“It’s somewhere I’m struggling. I’m working real hard at that,” Buxton said. “Probably just putting a little bit too much pressure on myself in those situations because I want to get the job done. But it felt good to come through.”
The Twins entered play on Friday with a record of 31-39.
Cardinals Playing Great Baseball
St. Louis has been a surprise team this season as the Cardinals have been playing great baseball.
The Cards are coming off a series win over the New York Mets, where they had a chance to sweep but fell short, losing the final game of the series.
“We did some things well today, but at the end of the day we came up short,” manager Oliver Marmol said. “But I like the way our guys played. We took some good at-bats. We were aggressive early, we were able to punch back early. Our group has done it a lot this year.”
Burleson, meanwhile, believes the energy around the Cardinals team is a key reason for their success.
“We won a series against a good team,” Burleson said. “Yeah, we felt we could have swept them, but the energy is still good. We are in a good spot. If you look at the last couple of years, if we don’t sweep a team we feel like we should, it’s just different. I think that’s the difference. We’ll bounce back from this one and move on to Minnesota.”
The Cardinals are 37-29 and in a Wild Card spot.
