White Sox trade ace left-hander Garrett Crochet to Red Sox

DALLAS — As the winter meetings were winding down Wednesday, the White Sox made a big splash.

They traded left-hander Garrett Crochet to the Red Sox, who will send left-handed hitting catcher Kyle Teel and three other prospects as part of the deal, which is pending a physical.

The White Sox will also receive outfielder Braden Montgomery, infielder Chase Meidroth and right-hander Wikelman Gonzalez. All are ranked among Boston’s top 14 prospects, per MLB Pipeline.

Teel and Montgomery are No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. On the surface, the White Sox appear to have a satisfactory return from an organization with a farm system ranked seventh by MLB Pipeline in August.

Eight winter meetings ago, the White Sox dealt ace lefty Chris Sale to the Red Sox for four prospects including Yoan Moncada and Michael Kopech, kicking off a rebuild under general manager Rick Hahn. Eight years later, GM Chris Getz has made a similar move as the Sox move into the second year of another rebuild.

The Sox lost a modern-day record 121 games last season, and may not be done dealing, having 2023 All-Star center fielder Luis Robert available in trade discussions.
