White Sox-Guardians game in rain delay after Miguel Vargas’ go-ahead, 3-run homer

CLEVELAND — The White Sox-Guardians game Friday was delayed by rain moments after Miguel Vargas hit a three-run homer to give the Sox a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning. Umpires appeared to be waiting for the riveting 10-pitch at-bat to end before calling for the grounds crew to unroll the tarp.

The Guardians took the lead in the third on Travis Bazzana’s base hit, which scored Gabriel Arias.

In the fifth, Chase Meidroth and Tristan Peters singled to start the inning. Then with two outs, Vargas fell behind 0-2 against right-hander Gavin Williams, worked the count full and lined a sweeper 374 feet — against the wind — over the left-field wall. The exit velocity was 106.3 mph.
