White Sox expect catcher Korey Lee to be back in lineup this weekend

GLENDALE, Ariz. — White Sox catcher Korey Lee showed off a puffy and purplish right hand Thursday morning and laughed.

“Yeah, trying to karate chop a baseball bat is probably not the best thing in the world,” Lee said. “This stuff happens. I’m surprised it didn’t happen more.”

Lee’s hand hit the bat of Brewers batter Rhys Hoskins as the catcher was trying to throw out a runner at third base. He left the game after the inning, but X-rays were negative. Manager Will Venable said Lee likely will return to the lineup this weekend.

“Saturday he’ll be back and he’s fine, feels good,” Venable said. “All the reports came back positive.”

Roster moves

The Sox made a round of cuts before their game Thursday in Scottsdale, most notably reassigning top pitching prospects Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith to minor league camp. The Sox also optioned pitchers Jake Eder and Jairo Iriarte to Triple-A Charlotte and sent right-hander Wikelman Gonzalez, acquired in the Garrett Crochet deal, to Double-A Birmingham.

Injury news

Right fielder Oscar Colas left the game Thursday game against the Giants in the sixth inning after spraining his right wrist while diving for a ball. He is listed as day to day.

Sox starter Jonathan Cannon, a candidate for the Opening Day start, got hammered for four runs and four hits — including three home runs — in three innings. “Today just comes down to execution,” Cannon said. “Just silly little mistakes. Obviously, I hope to get it all out now before the season starts. That’s just the goal of these outings every single time out there and try to take steps forward.”
