When Will Luka Doncic Return? New Details Reveal Playoff Timeline

Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic has sustained a Grade 2 hamstring strain, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania and Dave McMenamin.

The injury dealt the Lakers — who have won 15 of their last 18 games — a devastating late-season blow. Just when it looked like everything was firing on all cylinders, the franchise now must prepare to be without its best player for several weeks.

Hamstring injuries are notoriously tricky and downright frustrating. Recovery is often unpredictable. When a player finally gets cleared to return from it, they are often timid in their movement due to fear of re-aggravating the injury.

Doncic, who was in the midst of one of the most dominant regular season stretches the league has ever seen, was making a sure-fired NBA MVP case before going down in the Lakers’ last game.

The 27-year-old star is going to miss the rest of the regular season, making him ineligible for postseason awards, though there is speculation that Doncic could file a grievance with the league to maintain his eligibility.

On another note, L.A. fans are fearing their team’s playoff hopes, so when will Doncic be healthy enough to return?

Luka Doncic’s playoff timeline receives some clarity

Doncic missed a few games earlier in the season due to hamstring trouble, but his latest injury is clearly more severe.

The Lakers are holding on to the third seed in a tight Western Conference — for now. Doncic’s extended absence will almost certainly impact his team’s position in the final standings. Los Angeles is just 7-6 without Doncic in the lineup this season.

The team will try to hold off the fourth-seeded Denver Nuggets. The good news is the Lakers hold the tie-breaker thanks to a thrilling overtime win over the Nuggets last month. L.A. won thanks to a late go-ahead shot engineered by Doncic.

The Lakers will need plenty more of that, but how soon can they expect to get their superstar back so he can do just that?

A Grade 2 hamstring strain receives a generic recovery timeline of 3-6 weeks. But there’s more to it. It helps to look around the league and consider how long it took for players to return from the exact injury.

According to Jeff Stotts, an injury analyst at InStreetClothes.com, the average time lost to a Grade 2 hamstring strain is roughly 35 days, or an average of 14.7 games.

If we look 14-15 games down the road, that would take us well into the 2026 NBA playoffs.

The best-case scenario for the Doncic and the Lakers is … what exactly?

Now that’s the million dollar question.

Doncic has exhibited some toughness in terms of how soon he has been able to return from more-than-minor injuries. He’s faced soft tissue trouble multiple times in his career. Now is just the latest example.

Taking Stotts’ data of roughly 35 days, that brings Doncic’s return window to the start of the second week of May.

By that point, it is very likely the Lakers’ season will have already been well over. But let’s imagine they are able to get through the first round without Doncic.

Last year’s semifinals round began May 4. Using that as a reference, that could mean Doncic’s best-case scenario is returning for Game 2 or 3 of that round.

But again, we are talking potentially nine or 10 games into the playoffs, nevermind taking the regular season into account.

The bottom line is the Lakers’ margin for error has shrunk massively.

They clearly won’t be even remotely considered a contender or a team that could make it past the second round. Even the first round is pushing it.

L.A. has some adjustments to make and is in need of a fresh blueprint. Austin Reaves and LeBron James’ roles will have to change dramatically if the Lakers want to last long enough to even begin thinking about bringing Doncic back into the lineup.
