Let’s go to the theater — together! Just in time for spring culture season, WBEZ/Chicago Sun-Times is launching a Theater Club on April 18 with a trip to see “White Rooster” at Lookingglass Theater. We’ll see the play, chat as a club with some members of the artistic team and socialize with each other over the arts.
Tickets for our Theater Club outing to “White Rooster” will go on sale on Wednesday 4/8 at noon. Tickets will be available through links in our social media bio on TikTok. WBEZ High Fidelity Members will receive a special invite by email.
Our idea for a Theater Club started when our arts reporters noticed how many people attend shows solo, or are arts curious but not sure where to start. We all attend plenty of shows alone, but know theater is more fun with a friend. Going with a friend – or, let’s say, a club of 30 new friends! – can make trying something new less daunting. And that’s our goal: We want to help more of you explore Chicago’s eclectic and enterprising theater scene.
After testing a pilot last fall, we are announcing a three-event series in April, May and June that will feature trips to three world premiere plays at three different area theaters. We’ll kick off in April at Lookingglass. May will see our group headed to Steppenwolf for the world premiere of “Windfall,” by Academy Award-winner Tarell Alvin McCraney. And in June, we are headed to see “The Targeted,” a new play being staged by A Red Orchid Theatre at the Chopin Theatre.
Artistically, Chicago is known as a gutsy theater town where new work still happens. So it’s fitting that our theater club members will be experiencing a trio of new American plays that are still being shaped even as we view them. And that’s part of the excitement about our adventure: Not only do Theater Club events help stoke audience enthusiasm for the arts and foster a community of culture goers, but we get to be part of early audiences who are reacting to these works for the first time.
Tickets for “Windfall” and “The Targeted” will be released closer to the show dates.
