Water pipe burst forces hundreds of senior residents to evacuate Near West Side apartment

Hundreds of senior residents were forced to evacuate a Near West Side apartment building early Sunday after a water pipe broke.

The pipe ruptured just before 1 a.m. in the basement of a building in the 1600 block of West Madison Street, according to Chicago police.

About 400 senior residents were forced to evacuate the building, police said. Some were transported to a hotel for shelter, police said.

Two residents, 70 and 84, were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Officials have not released any further information.
