The Washington Commanders entered training camp potentially looking to add another wide receiver at some point, and while many believed they would pursue a trade for Brandon Aiyuk, the organization went in a different direction.
On Wednesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that free agent wide receiver Stefon Diggs intended to sign a one-year deal with Washington.
Two days later, the Commanders officially announced the signing publicly.
Commanders Announce Diggs Signing
Washington welcomed Diggs on Friday morning with a social media graphic and a simple caption.
“DIGGS (back) IN DC,” the Commanders posted.
Diggs’ NFL Career
Diggs will enter his 12th NFL season with his fourth team. He spent the first five years of his career with the Minnesota Vikings, followed by four seasons with the Buffalo Bills, one with the Houston Texans and last season with the New England Patriots.
He was the only Patriots wide receiver to surpass 1,000 receiving yards last season, playing a key role in the team’s unexpected Super Bowl run.
However, New England ultimately decided to release Diggs rather than pay the salary he was due this season.
Last year, Diggs caught 85 passes for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns. Over his career, he has totaled 942 receptions for 11,504 yards and 74 touchdowns while earning four Pro Bowl selections.
Commanders Offense
Diggs now joins an offense led by first-year offensive coordinator David Blough and third-year quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Washington returns Terry McLaurin as its No. 1 wide receiver, while Jacory Corky-Merritt takes over as the lead running back.
The Commanders also strengthened their offense by signing veteran running back Rachaad White and tight end Chig Okonkwo this offseason, giving quarterback Jayden Daniels two more experienced playmakers.
