Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green has come to terms that his longtime teammate Klay Thompson is no longer with the team.
“Iâm happy as hell he’s gone,” Green said on the Club 520 podcast more than one month since Thompson left the Warriors. “The reason Iâm happy heâs gone is because he wasnât happy no more. As a brother, I only want whatâs best for you, not whatâs best for me, not whatâs best for this team.”
A jilted Thompson left for the Dallas Mavericks via sign-and-trade with the help of the Warriors to get more than the midlevel exception. Still, the three-year, $50 million deal he signed with the Mavericks, per ESPNâs Adrian Wojnarowski, was less in annual average salary than the Warriorsâ initial offer last offseason which he declined.
Last seasonâs extension talks eroded Thompsonâs relationship with the Warriors which led to his tumultuous final season with the franchise.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Thompson felt disrespected as the Warriors only offered him half of what Green received.
âThompson was offered a two-year extension in the $50 million range by the Warriors before last season but passed on that pitch and is said to have come away from the offer feeling disrespected mere months after Green was re-signed to a four-year, $100 million pact,â Stein wrote in his Substack newsletter on June 29.
‘Weâll Have to Kick His Ass’
While also emotional about the ending of Thompsonâs era in Golden State, Warriors owner Joe Lacob also tried to make the unfortunate situation light-hearted when he discussed it on âThe Athletic NBA Showâ on July 17.
âI donât care what people think happened, or didnât happen,â Lacob said. âHe will always be welcome in my life. I hope he feels the same. Honestly, I get a little teary-eyed about it. I hope weâre going to be friends forever. And heâs just going to be in Dallas for a few years and weâll have to kick his ass. But thatâs just the job. And Iâm sure he feels the same way. Thatâs called competition.â
Thompsonâs exit signaled the end of an era that defined the last 10 years of the NBA. Thompson was part of the fabric, along with Stephen Curry and Green, of the Warriors dynasty that won four NBA championships.
âBob Myers used to say this all the time. Heâd say, it never ends well,â Lacob said. âItâs just unfortunate business. Itâs just the way it is and things get in the way and circumstances prevail. And so itâs a very difficult process â his injury, the coming back from the injury, which he didnât play for two and a half of the five-year contract and finally came back and really worked hard to get there. All I can tell you is we love him. Weâre going to build a statue for this guy without question obviously when theyâre all retired.â
Klay Thompson on First Meeting Against Warriors
Thompson looked happy he’s no longer a Warrior after his tumultuous final season with the team. He poked fun of a viral meme imagining his first meeting against the Warriors as the dance showdown scene from the movie âYou Got Served.
âIâm crying (with laughing emojis),” he said on his Instagram story.
Thompson’s return to Golden State this season will be the most anticipated game in the Warriors’ regular season schedule. It will be an emotional as it is competitive with Thompson playing with a chip on his shoulder.
