Warriors’ Moses Moody Has ‘Good News’ on Gruesome Injury

It was back on March 23 that Golden State Warriors forward Moses Moody suffered a torn left patellar tendon, an injury that was gruesome to look at and figures to keep him out for nine-to-12 months as he rehabs and hopes to get back on the court. There are not all that many injuries worse for a basketball player than what Moody suffered, and yet when he met with the Warriors media this week for the first time since he got hurt, he was surprisingly upbeat.

There are a few reasons for that. For one, it is in Moody’s nature to take a positive view. For another, NBA teams have become increasingly more careful about monitoring players’ mental health during injury rehabs, knowing it can be a mental grind and it’s easy to get into a dark place. The Warriors will try to keep Moody out of that kind of hole.

But Moody also said the way his injury happened actually made the comeback slightly better for him, and he thinks he might return in a year–or less, as he has no firm timetable–as a better player.

Moses Moody’s Injury Was ‘Best-Case Scenario’

Moody’s description of the injury is not for the faint of heart, but it does provide some good news for the Warriors as they seek their rough-and-tumble two-way wing back on the floor for the second half of 2026-27.

Said Moody: “When they told me it was a patellar tendon tear, this was the best case scenario, being straight from the bone, a clear tear. If it is not, it is a tendon-to-tendon and that’s harder to heal and make it stronger. Being from the bone, they can connect it to the bone and that is just a better way to do it.

“That was good news. The surgery was pretty easy, I was under like 90 minutes. Wasn’t too bad, and I was doing rehab the next day. On my way back.”

Warriors Will Miss His Toughness

The 23-year-old Moody had been averaging career highs in points (12.1), rebounds (3.3) and 3-point shooting (40.1%) for the Warriors, who will miss his physicality on the wing during the team’s attempt to win a quixotic trip to the NBA playoffs by winning two play-in games this week.

But he revealed that he has been dealing with a dodgy tendon for a long time now, and this is a chance to get it fixed more securely.

Said Moody: “My knee has been bothering me for a while, from middle school to high school, and it has all been patellar tendon. So I am glad to finally get it fixed. So coming back, I think I will be in a better place, getting it fixed.”

Moses Moody Taking Chance to ‘Slow Down’ as Warriors Prep for Play In

As for his mental state, Moody is still feeling positive about where this surgery will leave him in his Warriors career when he returns.

He said: “I feel good. It’s a unique time in my life to be able to slow down. Usually, an NBA season, you are ripping and running, doing so much, traveling so much. Being able to sit down, slow down, have a routine, get better at some stuff, talk to my family, talk with people all the time now. Just being intentional with my time is something that I have focused on and I have enjoyed it.”
