VJ Edgecombe Opens Up on Viral Wink After Historic 76ers Game

Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe delivered one of the most memorable performances of the postseason in Game 2 against the Boston Celtics. He scored 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, becoming the first rookie since Tim Duncan in 1998 to reach those marks in a playoff game, Sixerswire reports. He also did it while battling through back discomfort after a hard fall early in the game that forced two trips to the locker room.

That stat line alone would have dominated headlines. Instead, another moment added fuel to the buzz.

“I didn’t even remember doing it,” Edgecombe said, referring to the now-viral wink that quickly spread across social media. “My teammates in the locker room were like, ‘Bro, you’re always aura farming.’”

The moment came late in the game, with cameras appearing to catch him winking toward the lens. Edgecombe clarified that the gesture had nothing to do with the audience.

“Nah, I was looking at my teammate, and he was just in the line of the camera,” he said at practice. “I think it was either KO or PG. That’s what I was looking at when I did that.”

Rookie Performance Lands in Elite Company

While the wink grabbed attention, the performance itself carried historic weight. Edgecombe also became the first rookie in NBA history to hit five three-pointers and secure 10 rebounds in a playoff game. The outing marked a major response after a quieter Game 1, where he finished with 13 points on 6-of-16 shooting.

Paul George, who sat beside Edgecombe during the postgame press conference, paused mid-answer to ask a simple question.

“Are you 21 yet?” George said.

Edgecombe smiled and replied, “No, 20.”

That exchange captured the moment. A 20-year-old rookie stepping into a playoff environment and producing at a level rarely seen.

George pointed to earlier signs of that potential, referencing Edgecombe’s 34-point debut in the season opener in Boston, Philly Trib reports. “When you think about how he started his first NBA game in this building, he’s already in a small group of players,” George said.

Edgecombe Credits Confidence, Not Pressure

Edgecombe kept his explanation simple when asked about his approach. He avoids overthinking and leans on the environment around him.

“I just try not to overthink it,” he said. “I try not to put pressure on myself. Everybody’s already putting pressure on us to perform.”

He credited his teammates for keeping him grounded and confident throughout the game. “I’m around a great group of guys. That helps me. Just keep instilling confidence in me. Just to keep going.”

Even the physical toll of the game did not slow him down. Despite the early fall and visible discomfort, Edgecombe dismissed any lingering concern ahead of Game 3.

“I ain’t sore,” he said. “I’m good. I’m ready to go play basketball. I got a lot of treatment, take care of my body, and I’ve been doing that prior.”

The performance, the poise, and even the viral moment all point to the same takeaway. Edgecombe did not chase the spotlight, but it found him anyway. Let’s see what he brings for the next game.
