UConn faced Michigan in the national championship game on Monday, ultimately losing 69-63. The Huskies showed remarkable grit until the final buzzer, but they struggled to break through the Wolverines’ tough defense.
Historically, the Huskies have claimed the championship title six times, including two victories under head coach Dan Hurley. They know exactly how Michigan felt when the game ended.
As the Wolverines began celebrating their victory, the Huskies stayed on the court despite their disappointment. Rather than heading straight to the locker room, they chose to wait and let Michigan finish its celebrations, giving both teams a chance to shake hands and show respect for each other.
Dan Hurley Responds to Viral Moment
A video of the players shaking hands was posted on X by CBS Sports writer Matt Norlander. “Really good moment: Dan Hurley and the entire UConn team waited for the Michigan players to come back after their immediate celebration to shake their heads and congratulate them on winning the national title,” Norlander wrote.
While everyone praised UConn for its decision to shake hands, Hurley responded to the video on Tuesday night.
“I have a great deal of respect for the men that we compete against in the arena…We battled. They won,” Hurley wrote on X.
UConn Got Into Foul Trouble Early
The game was somewhat challenging to watch because there wasn’t much flow, with UConn in foul trouble for most of the night.
UConn finished the game with 22 fouls, while Michigan had only 13. However, the key factor in Michigan’s victory was its impressive performance at the free-throw line. The Wolverines converted 25 out of 28 free throws, which played a significant role in securing their win.
Some of the fouls called against UConn seemed questionable, yet even Hurley, known for his disputes with officials, had no issues with the officiating.
“It’s hard to ref that game. We both played so hard,” Hurely said on Monday, via Athlon Sports Abdul Bari Khan. “If I could have those three guys ref every game the rest of my career, I would sleep well at night.”
UConn understood it needed to play a physical game to beat Michigan, which is why the Huskies found themselves in foul trouble. Hurley was fully aware that the matchup would be intense and demanding.
“It’s such a physical game; Michigan is so physical. ” And again, it’s not the reason why we lost the game, obviously,” Hurley said of the fouls, via CT Insider’s Nathaniel Rosenberg. “A problem for our team has been this undisciplined fouling at times.” It’s hard to ref that game, we both played so hard.”
One of the biggest turning points in the game occurred when UConn’s two starting guards, Silas Demary Jr. and Solo Ball, both picked up two early fouls in the first half. This forced them to sit for most of the first half, and then Ball picked up two more quick fouls in the second half, making it difficult for the Huskies to recover.
UConn has nothing to be ashamed of, and even though it didn’t get the result it hoped for, it played Michigan better than any other team in the NCAA tournament.
