The Minnesota Vikings and head coach Kevin O’Connell have entered training camp with an ongoing quarterback competition. Both Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy are still battling to be the team’s Week 1 starter against the Green Bay Packers.
During the offseason, the Vikings made an aggressive move to sign Murray after his release from the Arizona Cardinals. Following a 2025 season that saw McCarthy struggle to stay healthy and struggle to find consistency, O’Connell and company knew a move was needed.
Murray has been expected to win the starting job to open the 2026 season. It is not a foregone conclusion that he will be the starter, but most anticipate that will be the case.
On the other hand, Minnesota did use the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on McCarthy. Benching him after just one season as the starter would be a difficult choice to make.
With that being said, one Vikings reporter has weighed in with a strong prediction about the quarterback battle.
Minnesota Vikings Reporter Drops Strong Quarterback Prediction
Minnesota reporter Will Ragatz has shared some strong words with his thoughts on the competition. He would be shocked if Murray doesn’t end up winning the job.
“I’d be pretty stunned if Murray isn’t the Vikings’ quarterback in Week 1,” Ragatz said.
At the end of the day, the Vikings didn’t sign Murray to come in and sit the bench. They signed him to give him a chance to win the starting job and be a quarterback upgrade.
Sitting McCarthy after just one season would be disappointing, but Minnesota wants to win. Murray seems to be the better candidate to pursue winning at this point in time.
Kyler Murray Has a Chance at Stardom With Vikings
Originally drafted by the Cardinals with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Murray was expected to be a superstar. He has dealt with some injury troubles throughout his career that have held him back from becoming that kind of player.
Throughout his seven-year NFL career, Murray has played in 87 games. He has completed 67.1 percent of his pass attempts for 20,460 yards, 121 touchdowns, and 60 interceptions, while also running for 3,193 yards and 32 touchdowns.
Murray is still just 28 years old. He is capable of being a long-term option for the Vikings if the situation works out in his favor.
With a supporting cast like Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Jauan Jennings, Aaron Jones, Jordan Mason, and T.J. Hockenson, the sky is truly the limit.
Hopefully, Minnesota can find a true franchise quarterback in either Murray or McCarthy. For now, it sure seems like Murray is the front-runner to win the Week 1 starting job.
