OAKLAND — A minivan caught fire Monday morning in the Caldecott Tunnel, prompting the closure of Bore 1 and snarling traffic throughout the area.
The fire was reported shortly before 10 a.m. in the middle of eastbound Bore 1, according to Michael Hunt, a spokesman for the Oakland Fire Department. Crews managed to extinguish the blaze about an hour later.
As of 11:15 a.m., the bore remained closed and crews were waiting for the vehicle to be towed from the tunnel.
No one was injured in the blaze, and preliminary reports suggested that a passerby managed to help pull the driver from the burning vehicle out to safety.
