Update: Wind advisory in place for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area and the Mammoth Mountain Area until Tuesday evening

The Greater Lake Tahoe Area and the Mammoth Mountain Area are included in an updated wind advisory issued by the National Weather Service on Tuesday at 2:03 a.m. The advisory is valid between 4 a.m. and 7 p.m.

“Southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 to 50 mph for Sierra communities at lake level and along Highway 395; and up to 50 to 65 mph near wind prone areas in Mono County. Winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 90 to 100 mph at the Sierra crest. Wave heights of 2 to 5 feet at Lake Tahoe,” can be anticipated according to the NWS Reno NV. “The strongest winds are expected late this morning into this afternoon.”

“Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve,” according to the NWS. “Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution. Secure outdoor objects.”

High wind alerts: Your guide to safety

When it comes to high wind alerts, understanding the levels of risk is crucial. The NWS classifies them into three distinct categories:

High wind warning: Take action.

Sustained, strong winds with even stronger gusts are happening. Seek shelter. If you are driving, keep both hands on the wheel and slow down.

Wind advisory: Take action.

Strong winds are occurring but are not so strong as to warrant a High wind warning. Objects that are outdoors should be secured and caution should be taken if driving.

High wind watch: Be prepared.

Sustained, strong winds are possible. Secure loose outdoor items and adjust plans as necessary so you’re not caught outside.
