Tyrese Maxey Struggles Raise Serious Question For 76ers vs Rockets

The Philadelphia 76ers are set for a matchup against the Houston Rockets on Thursday, April 9.

Heading into the game, the Sixers are dealing with some serious questions regarding their star guard, Tyrese Maxey.

While the veteran star has been back in the lineup since March 28, Maxey’s shooting has been inconsistent.

In the past six games, the star guard has made just 31.3% of his shots from deep.

Considering Maxey missed multiple weeks of action due to a finger injury, it’s valid to question whether the ailment is still bothering him or not.

Either way, the struggles are concerning heading into a must-win-all stretch, with the NBA postseason around the corner.

“I’m worried about Tyrese Maxey heading into the playoffs,” PHLY’s Kye Neubeck said earlier this week.

“He’s shooting just 10-32 from three since returning from his hand injury, and he was really passive in Monday’s loss against the Spurs. Without an elite Maxey to lead from the perimeter, the Sixers get way too predictable on offense. And they get even more reliant on a rookie VJ Edgecombe. Are these shooting struggles just a blip? Or is Maxey compromised for the rest of the season? Too soon to tell.”

Before going down with his recent setback, Maxey was shooting 37.3% from three, while taking 8.9 threes per game.

The veteran guard was producing 29.0 points per game, 6.7 assists per game, and 4.1 rebounds per game.

Since the return from the injury, numbers have been down across the board. Maxey is producing just 22.7 points per game, while shooting 31.3% from three. The only slight positive is that assists have climbed to 7.2 per game.

The Sixers Need Every Win Moving Forward

Maxey and the Sixers would like to avoid the NBA Play-In Tournament. They can’t afford another loss during the final three games. And even if they win them all, cracking the sixth seed isn’t a guarantee.

The Sixers need three wins and a Toronto Raptors loss in order to get what they want. If all doesn’t go right, the Sixers will be in the Tournament, fighting for their postseason lives.

The challenge begins on Thursday night against a surging Rockets team. Houston is 50-29 on the year, and just won seven games in a row.
