Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes are pushing back against claims that they control their Kansas City steakhouse as a federal trademark lawsuit over the restaurant’s name continues.
According to new court filings obtained by TMZ, the Kansas City Chiefs stars argue they do not have a direct ownership interest in the company behind 1587 Prime and should not be held responsible in the trademark dispute. The plaintiff, however, says the two NFL stars are trying to distance themselves from a business they actively promoted.
The lawsuit centers on the name “1587,” which combines Mahomes’ No. 15 jersey and Kelce’s No. 87.
New Court Filing Challenges Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes’ Defense
The lawsuit was filed by 1587 Sneakers, which alleges it already owned the trademark for “1587” before Kelce and Mahomes announced plans for their steakhouse.
According to TMZ, Kelce and Mahomes have asked the court to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing they have no control over the restaurant’s business operations and lack sufficient ties to New York, where the lawsuit was filed.
The athletes reportedly contend that evidence will show they “hold no direct interest in, and are not authorized to exert control over,” the limited liability company created to launch the restaurant.
The plaintiff disagrees.
In its latest filing, 1587 Sneakers argues Kelce and Mahomes are attempting to portray themselves as “two distant celebrities that are mere promotional ‘pretty faces’ of the alleged infringing enterprise with no New York ties.”
The company maintains the two players should remain defendants because they publicly associated themselves with the restaurant and promoted it during its launch.
The trademark case remains ongoing, and the court has not ruled on the motion to dismiss.
Kelce and Mahomes Helped Launch 1587 Prime in Kansas City
Kelce and Mahomes announced 1587 Prime in partnership with hospitality company Noble 33, with the restaurant opening on Sept. 17, 2025.
The restaurant’s website describes the concept as “a collaboration between NFL icons Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, in partnership with Noble 33.”
The two Chiefs stars also participated in a series of media appearances promoting the steakhouse before it opened.
Noble 33 founders Tosh Berman and Mikey Tanha previously said they worked closely with Mahomes and Kelce to create a restaurant that reflects Kansas City’s food culture.
“With 1587 Prime, we didn’t just set out to create another steakhouse,” Berman said. “We worked with Patrick and Travis to capture the essence of Kansas City.”
The menu features premium steakhouse offerings, including Japanese A5 Wagyu New York strip, boneless ribeye and a 40-ounce Wagyu tomahawk steak served tableside.
Guests can customize their steaks with lobster tail, crab, bone marrow or blue cheese, alongside a selection of compound butters and signature sauces.
The restaurant also includes several dishes inspired by the Chiefs stars, including the “Mahomes Ketchup Flight,” a nod to the quarterback’s well-known preference for pairing ketchup with steak. The flight features three house-made ketchup varieties.
Other menu items include steak tartare prepared with hand-cut Wagyu, a smoked Gouda twice-baked potato and togarashi fried chicken served with hot, chive and wasabi honeys.
