Trader Joe’s is coming to Jefferson Park

The popular grocery chain Trader Joe’s said it’s planning to open its seventh Chicago location in Jefferson Park.

Company spokesperson Nakia Rohde said Trader Joe’s hasn’t picked a site or timeline for opening, but confirmed to the Sun-Times on Monday that it’s eyeing the far Northwest neighborhood.

“We are actively looking at hundreds of neighborhoods across the country as we hope to open more new neighborhood stores each year,” Rohde said in an emailed statement.

Ald. Jim Gardiner (45th) announced early December the grocer’s imminent presence in his ward in a Facebook post. It included a picture of a former CVS at 6200 W. Higgins Ave.

Gardiner’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

The pharmacy closed in 2022, and the building has remained vacant ever since, according to Nadig Newspapers. CVS operated at the site since 2007.

The more than 22,000-square-foot building was being marketed by commercial real estate firm Matanky Realty Group for use as a gym, dispensary or medical facility, among other uses. It has more than 100 parking spaces and is located on a busy street, according to listing details from Matanky Realty.

Trader Joe’s has six locations in Chicago and one in Evanston. There’s additional locations in the city’s surrounding suburbs, including Arlington Heights, Oak Park and Park Ridge.

The grocer’s first South Side store was announced in May 2019. The Hyde Park location, 1528 E. 55th St., replaced the shuttered Treasure Island Foods.
