Shocking news broke on Tuesday evening about legendary New England Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick. Belichick received a call on Tuesday from a Hall of Fame representative who told him that he fell short of the necessary number of votes to induct him into the Hall.
So, the second winningest coach in NFL history and the coach with the most Super Bowl wins will not be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
Another Patriots legend by the name of Tom Brady spoke on the controversial decision on Wednesday morning as a guest on “Brock and Salk,” a Seattle based radio show.
âI don’t understand it,” Brady said. “If he’s not a first-ballot Hall of Famer, there’s really no coach that should ever be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.â
Three coaches have been named first ballot Hall of Famers in the history of the NFL: Don Shula, Chuck Noll, and Tom Landry. Shula has the most wins in NFL history with 347, just 14 more than Belichick’s 333. Noll and Landry had 217 and 270 wins, respectively.
“He’s incredible,” Brady continued. “There’s no coach I’d rather play for. If I’m picking one coach to go out there and win a Super Bowl, give me one season, I’m picking Bill Belichick. So that’s enough said.”
Brady Knocks Hall of Fame Voting Process
Brady didn’t mince his words when talking about how the Hall of Fame voters made their decisions.
“When it comes down to votes and popularity and all that, then welcome to the world of voting,” he said. “You may as well go try out for the Oscars and get a big panel to tell you if you’re good or not.”
NFL insiders Don Van Natta Jr. and Seth Wickersham gave more insight on the decision in a column for ESPN.com:
“Multiple sources told ESPN that Spygate and Deflategate, the twin cheating scandals during the Patriots’ championship run, came up in deliberations among voters,” Van Natta and Wickersham wrote. “A voter who spoke on condition of anonymity said that [Bill] Polian, an ardent Kraft supporter and former general manager of the Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts — a chief Patriots rival during their dynasty — told some voters he believed Belichick should “wait a year” before induction as penance for Spygate, the 2007 cheating scandal that cost the team a first-round draft pick.”
Brady Still Confident Belichick Will Eventually Get In
Brady is still confident that Belichick will eventually get in, as soon as next year. It would be a true stain on the Hall of Fame if he doesn’t make it in his second year on the ballot. Heck, the Hall of Fame has already gained a stain by not voting him in this year.
“He’s going to get into the Hall of Fame, in the end I’m not worried about that,” Brady said. “A lot of times in life for all of us things don’t happen when you want them on your timeline. We’ll all be there to celebrate him when it does happen.”
The inductees will be announced at the “NFL Honors” ceremony on Feb. 5.
