Timberwolves Urged To Target Anthony Davis Over Giannis Antetokounmpo

The Minnesota Timberwolves are expected to make some changes to their roster this offseason after a rough second-round exit in the 2026 NBA playoffs.

Team president Tim Connelly is known for taking risks, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he takes another one this summer.

The Timberwolves were linked to Giannis Antetokounmpo and Ja Morant at the trade deadline, but no deal was made.

NBA insider Jake Fischer recently reported in his live stream for Bleacher Report that Minnesota could be out of the Giannis sweepstakes. So who can the Timberwolves target now?

Timberwolves Urged To Target Anthony Davis

With the expectation that the Timberwolves are not going after Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason, Ethan Kinney of Dunking With Wolves presented an alternative target.

Kinney suggested taking a risk on Anthony Davis, who has yet to play for the Washington Wizards since getting acquired back in February. Davis could be looking for a way out since he doesn’t want to be a part of a rebuilding team.

“It’s probably smart that the Wolves likely backed out of the (Giannis) sweepstakes, as the juice probably wasn’t worth the squeeze with the amount of assets the Wolves would have to give up,” Kinney wrote. “If they can get a relatively similar player in Anthony Davis for half of the price that it would have cost to get Giannis, that seems like a risk that could pay dividends.”

Davis would be a risky get for the Timberwolves, though he fits in perfectly with Anthony Edwards. It’s a matter of staying healthy for Davis, who has only played 29 games since the Los Angeles Lakers traded him to the Dallas Mavericks in February 2025 as part of the Luka Doncic deal.

The 10-time All-Star will also be dealing with an eye issue for the rest of his career. He has been required to wear goggles after suffering a detached retina toward the end of the 2024-25 NBA season.

Trae Young Trying To Convince Anthony Davis To Buy In

In addition to Anthony Davis, the Washington Wizards also acquired Trae Young this season back in January.

While Davis appears to be unconvinced by the Wizards’ future, Young has reportedly bought in and will convince his star teammate to commit to the franchise, according to Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson.

“Sources on Trae Young’s side tell me that the Wizards point guard has been exceptionally vocal and adamant behind closed doors, trying to convince Davis to fully commit to the franchise,” Robinson wrote. “Young’s pitch is simple yet aggressive: he firmly believes that with the talent already on hand—and the potential additions they can make—the Wizards can genuinely disrupt the hierarchy of an increasingly competitive Eastern Conference.”

The Wizards are loaded with young players, such as Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington, Bilal Coulibaly, Kyshawn George and Tre Johnson. They also have the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft and are expected to add AJ Dybantsa.
