Tigers Top Prospect Kevin McGonigle Turning Heads In Spring Training

Tigers Top Prospect and 2nd best overall prospect in baseball, shortstop Kevin McGonigle, has been the talk of Tigers Spring Training, posting a .400/.471/.667 slash line with a 1.138 OPS in his first seven spring training games and 15 plate appearances.

McGonigle continued his strong showing at the plate last night in an exhibition game versus the stacked Dominican Republic roster ahead of the 2026 World Baseball Classic, in which McGonigle went 3-3, leading off the game with a towering solo home run to right field that traveled a projected 461 feet off of Dominican Republic’s starting pitcher Luis Severino, according to Baseball America.

McGonigle, in his other two plate appearances, had a pair of singles off of Severino and reliever Camilio Doval, reports Baseball America.

McGonigle Is A Highly Regarded Prospect Around Baseball

It’s easy to see why the Tigers and the rest of the baseball landscape think so highly of McGonigle, who is coming off a very strong 2025 season in which he posted a .372 batting average in High A. McGonigle had a bit of a dip in that decline after a promotion to Double A, hitting just for a .235 batting average. Still, he finished the season strong in the Arizona Fall League, posting a .362 batting average with a .710 slugging percentage, 5 home runs, and a 1.210 OPS in 19 games.

McGonigle hit 19 home runs across three different levels of minor league baseball in 2025. Standing at 5’10 “and weighing 187 lbs, McGonigle is a hitter with an advanced approach at just 21 years old. He has some power in his bat, but he has a tremendous ability to hit for contact and place pressure on opposing defenders. His scouting report on minor league baseball’s website and prospect rankings describes a player who has “the ability to hit to all fields” with “authority” and “demonstrate plate discipline” so he can get the pitches he wants to hit and do damage, according to the minor league baseball prospect rankings website.

Tigers Have Shortstop Void To Fill In 2026

The Tigers have a question mark at shortstop in 2026, and McGonigle could be a guy who seamlessly fills that void. In 2025, Trey Sweeney played the majority of the time at shortstop for the Tigers, but utility infielder Zack McKinstry would also occasionally make starts at the position.

Sweeney, age 25, a left-handed hitter acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers back in 2024, has incredible sprint speed but was ranked as a well below-average defender in 2025. He also didn’t hit much, hitting for a lowly .196 batting average with 6 home runs and a .549 OPS, according to Baseball Savant.

The Tigers need better production at shortstop in 2025 if they want to continue making strides as a top contender in the AL Central and the entire American League. There’s also infielder Javy Baez, who came up as a shortstop in the Cubs organization, but the Tigers had moved him to the outfield last year, and he’s had some trouble being productive in his 30’s.

With the way McGonigle is playing so far, however, poses a real question as to whether he’ll make the team come Opening Day as their shortstop. He’s certainly given himself the best chance of at least making it a possibility. Whether he makes the Opening Day roster or not, one thing seems certain: With the way McGonigle is developing, Tigers fans probably won’t have to wait too long to see him make his big league debut.
