Tigers Make Gleyber Torres Announcement Before Red Sox Game

The Detroit Tigers will be without Gleyber Torres for the next few days.

Torres has been out of the lineup since getting hurt on Saturday, but he remained on the active roster. However, with Torres still not being available, the Tigers placed the second baseman on the injured list, according to beat writer Cody Stavenhagen.

“Tigers have placed Gleyber Torres on the IL with a mild left oblique strain. Jace Jung is up in his place,” Stavenhagen wrote.

Torres accepted the qualifying offer from the Tigers for $22.05 million for one year to return to Detroit this offseason. He’s off to a good start this season, as he’s hitting .259 with 2 home runs and 11 RBIs.

With Torres going on the injured list, Jung has been called up to fill the void. Jung was selected 12th overall in the 2022 MLB Draft and was just recently demoted to Triple-A for Zack Short.

However, due to the injury to Torres, Jung is back with the Tigers and will be available tonight. He has 4 at-bats this season, going 1-for-4. In his MLB career, Jung is hitting .192 with 6 RBIs in 57 gams over three seasons.

Tigers Didn’t Think Torres Injury Was Serious

Torres left Saturday’s game with an injury, but the team didn’t expect it to result in an IL stint.

Instead, after the game, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said he felt like it was more of a day-to-day thing.

“I just know he didn’t feel great, asked to come out of the game with the side tightness,” Hinch said after Saturday about Torres. “We’ll get him a full evaluation. But he loves to play, so I immediately didn’t feel great when he asked to come out. But I’m glad he did (report it) and didn’t do anything further.”

However, Torres has yet to be in the lineup or be available off the bench since Saturday, which has resulted in him going on the IL.

“All of the tests came back with positive news, which is great,” Hinch said about Torres before Sunday’s game. “He’ll start moving around and see if we’re going to use him, or we’ll just give him the day. When those tests came back last night, it made me sleep a lot better.”

Torres is a three-time MLB All-Star and was named to the All-Star Game in 2025 in his first year in Detroit.

Jung Failed to Make Opening Day Roster

Jung is one of the Tigers’ top prospects, but he failed to make the team’s Opening Day roster this season.

“I was devastated,” Jung said about the demotion. “When you put your expectations really high, and you don’t meet them, it’s a shot in the face because I didn’t perform like I wanted to.”

After being called up earlier this season, he admitted he felt like he was trying to do too much in spring training.

“I think I was just trying to do too much,” said Jung. “I put too much pressure on myself at the plate to make those adjustments quick.”

Jung will now have a chance to make another impact with the Tigers with Torres on the IL.
