Thunderstorms cause more than 100 delays and ‘ground delay’ at O’Hare and Midway Airports

More than 100 flight delays have been reported at O’Hare and Midway early Wednesday as thunderstorms move through the Chicago area.

A ground delay went into effect around 5 a.m. at O’Hare and was expected to last most of the day due to the storms, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The average delay at O’Hare was slightly over two hours.

As of 6 a.m., nearly 100 flights were delayed at O’Hare and eight were canceled, according to FlightAware. At Midway, 33 flights were delayed and 27 more were canceled.

Wednesday’s early morning storms could give way to a stronger wave of storms into the afternoon that may bring damaging winds, hail and tornadoes, the National Weather Service said.
