ANTIOCH — Three people were hospitalized with serious burn injuries Thursday night after an outdoor fire pit exploded at a residence, fire officials said.
Crews responded about 9 p.m. to the explosion on Silveria Way. Investigators have not determined whether the fire pit was wood- or gas-powered or why it exploded, Contra Costa Fire Protection District spokesperson Fire Prevention Capt. Joe Ottolini said.
The injured people suffered second- and third-degree burns to their upper extremities and facial areas, according to Ottolini. One went by air ambulance to the Firefighters Burn Institute Regional Burn Center at UC Davis. The other two went to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.
The status of the injured people wasn’t known Friday afternoon.
A fourth person at the scene escaped injury.
