The Houston Texans are clearly dissatisfied with what they have on their roster. Enough so that the Texans are eyeing former Chicago Bears draft pick Trenton Gill.
The Texans had already made plans with two outsiders, and they added two more on Thursday.
The unfortunate part is that the Texans created their own issue, have tried to course-correct ever since, and will likely face what may have been a superior alternative all along multiple times this coming season.
Texans Eye Ex-Bears Draft Pick for Training Camp Position Battle

On Wednesday, reports surfaced that the Texans were set to work out two puntersârookie Chris Freeman and veteran Jack Browningâdespite having two on the roster. As it turns out, the Texans worked out four punters on Thursday.

Like Freeman, Ferrin is a college free agent, though both have been in camps with teams this offseason.
Gill was a seventh-round pick, taken 255th overall in the 2022 draft by the Bears.
Texans Searching for Answers
GettyTrenton Gill was not on an NFL roster in 2025.
The 27-year-old Gill was out of the NFL in 2025. He signed with the Atlanta Falcons in January, and he re-signed on a futures contract this offseason. But the two sides parted ways in April, leaving Gill in search of his next opportunity.
That could be with the Texans, who traded for second-year UDFA Kai Kroeger and signed Jack Stonehouse.
Kroeger was arguably the NFLâs least productive punter last year. Stonehouse is a rookie UDFA.
The Texans swapped a sixth-round pick for Kroeger and a seventh-rounder from the New Orleans Saints, but it is hard to envision they have been enamored with him so far, given all of the other options they continue to explore.
