PITTSBURG — A man who died Thursday morning after the SUV he was in crashed off Highway 4 and onto the tracks at the Pittsburg/Bay Point BART station, was identified by the coroner’s office Friday.
The California Highway patrol still has not determined if the man — Dalton Towery-Britt, 33, of Antioch — was driving the SUV or if the driver was a woman who survived the crash. Her name was not released.
The crash, which shut down BART service between Antioch and North Concord for several hours, happened about 3:30 a.m. Thursday.
A BMW X5 occupied by Towery-Britt and the woman was driving eastbound on Highway 4 west of Bailey Road when the SUV went across traffic lanes, left the roadway and crashed through barriers before stopping on the BART tracks about 100 feet south of the station, authorities said.
Towery-Britt was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
As of Friday, the CHP still had not released a cause for the crash, but had said earlier that alcohol was a possible factor.
The crash forced electrical power to the tracks to be shut down. Train service was restored about 7:40 a.m. after the SUV was removed from the tracks and repairs were made to the tracks and fencing, BART officials said.
BART worked with local transit agencies to ensure bus service was available for riders until trains were running again.
