Suspected drunken driver arrested in Richmond collision that left teen dead

RICHMOND — A 16-year-old boy died early Monday after the vehicle he was backing out of his driveway was struck by a suspected drunken driver who was later arrested, police said.

The youth was identified by the coroner’s office Tuesday as Ricardo Funes.

The fatal collision happened about 12:05 a.m. Monday on Ohio Avenue near South 20th Street, police said.

Police said the youth was backing out of his home’s driveway when his vehicle was struck by a speeding vehicle going eastbound on Ohio Avenue.

The impact left both drivers trapped in their vehicles. They were extricated by firefighters and taken to a hospital where Funes died, police said.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 30-year-old man, was treated and released at a hospital and was placed under arrest for vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said.
