Suspect sobs after prosecutors detail South Side triple stabbing of mom and 2 kids that sparked Amber Alert

Marcus A. Bausley stalked his ex-partner, threatening her in over 200 texts and phone calls over a couple days when he thought she was with another man, before confronting her at a family’s home months later and stabbing her during an argument, Cook County prosecutors said.

When her 8-year-old son tried to intervene, Bausley allegedly stabbed him too.

Then, after driving off with the child and leaving his ex-partner to die at the bottom of a stairwell, he allegedly picked up another of her sons from basketball practice and eventually stabbed the 11-year-old.

Prosecutors detailed the violent 12-hour period in a court hearing Friday afternoon, for the first time explaining what led to the fatal stabbing of 33-year-old Teone Jones on Feb. 20, and the wounding of her two children.

Jones’s relatives sat in a packed courtroom of the Leighton Criminal Courthouse as a judge ordered Bausley, 40, detained pending trial.

As deputies led a sobbing Bausley from the courtroom, someone in the gallery mocked him, yelling: “What are you crying for? Hold your head up.”

Bausley could be seen saying something inaudible before he was escorted from the room. Bausley, 40, is charged with murder, attempted murder and kidnapping, officials said.

After the hearing, Jones’s brother Malik Wilson told reporters he was looking forward to Bausley’s sentencing.

“All I’m wishing is God curse his soul and thrown him to Hell. But at the end of the day, it’s His decision,” he said.

The series of stabbings began the evening of Feb. 20 at a home in the 7100 block of South Eberhart Avenue, Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Pekara said in court. That’s where Bausley and Jones both lived with their 4-year-old child, as well as Jones’s other children, ages 8 and 11.

During an argument that evening, Bausley grabbed a knife and, after pushing Jones down a staircase, stabbed her repeatedly as the 8-year-old boy watched, Pekara said.

When the 8-year-old yelled at him to stop, Bausley turned and stabbed the child multiple times in his body, Pekara said. The child later told investigators that he could see his mother’s face was “very white” as she lay at the bottom of the stairs, Pekara said.

Bausley drove off with his 4-year-old and the wounded 8-year-old child, Pekara said. Bausley texted his family group chat, stating, “If something happens to me, take care of my son please,” according to Pekara.

Bausley dropped his 4-year-old off at his mother’s house, then drove to pick up Jones’s 11-year-old son from basketball practice in North Lawndale, Pekara said.

Jones’s mother became concerned and traveled to the home on Eberhart. Upon seeing blood inside, she climbed through a window and found her daughter’s body at the bottom of the stairs, Pekara said.

She dialed 911 and performed life-saving measures. But Jones was pronounced dead later at a hospital. Police then issued an Amber Alert for the missing 8- and 11-year-olds and Bausley’s car.

Meanwhile, Bausley had parked near 66th Street and Yale Avenue, where surveillance video captured him stabbing the 11-year-old in the car, Pekara said. The video shows the child running away and bleeding, he said.

The 11-year-old knocked on a front door, screaming for help. A passerby noticed and called authorities. The child is still hospitalized in critical condition for stab wounds to his abdominal organs, Pekara said.

At 4:04 a.m. the next morning, Bausley texted his mother and Jones’s mother where he had dropped off the 8-year-old, Pekara said. Police searched the area and found the boy in the 8200 block of South Damen Avenue. He was treated for stab wounds to his chin, chest, hand and back.

By 10 a.m., license plate reading cameras alerted Lake County deputies in Indiana of Bausley’s car, Pekara said. As deputies approached his stopped car on Interstate 65, Bausley stabbed himself several times in the abdomen before placing the knife to his neck, Pekara said.

Deputies arrested Bausley on charges of resisting arrest and held him in an Indiana jail. He was extradited to Cook County this week on charges of murder, attempted murder and kidnapping.

The couple had two previous incidents of domestic violence, Pekara said.

In October, while Jones was out to dinner, she received several calls from Bausley accusing her of being with another man, he said. She blocked his number, but then received messages on social media telling her that he could see her with another man, Pekara said. When she left the restaurant, her car window had been broken with a brick. She told authorities later that Bausley had texted her over 200 times over two days, Pekara said.

Later, on Christmas Day, Jones told police that Bausley had punched her in the face, Pekara said. Bausley had also taken a pistol and threatened to shoot her and himself, he said.

Bausley is due in court again April 9.
