Suspect arrested in Oakland sex worker stabbings

OAKLAND — An Oakland man was arrested and charged in connection with two attacks on sex workers in Oakland, though one of the charges was later thrown out after a pretrial hearing, records show.

McBryan Mendoza-Matias, 25, was charged last month with two counts of assault for allegedly stabbing two women after Mendoza-Matias solicited the victims for sex. After a Feb. 18 preliminary hearing in which only one of the women testified, he was held to answer on one of the charges, records show.

The women reported being stabbed on Jan. 15 and Jan. 27. The Jan. 15 attack was unprovoked, according to police.

The Jan. 27 stabbing occurred after Mendoza-Matias allegedly negotiated an $80 price for sex, but the woman later told Mendoza-Matias his time was up and wouldn’t accept a $20 payment for continuation, authorities said. That’s when she said he produced a pocket knife and stabbed her, according to police.

Both women identified Mendoza-Matias out of a photo lineup, police said. But only the woman from the Jan. 27 attack testified at the preliminary hearing, according to a court records.

Mendoza-Matias remains jailed with bail set at $60,000 and he is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday, records show.
