A shoebox-sized restaurant serving grab-and-go Vietnamese food has opened on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland.
Mon Superette comes from the team behind Alameda’s “‘not-so-everyday” Vietnamese restaurant, Bacogai. As the name implies, it’s set up like a little supermarket with snacks and drinks in a fridge case and a small menu of larger, hot dishes you can order to-go from the back kitchen.

Diners have a range of prepackaged, interesting-looking snacks to choose from right now. There are cute, Cubist egg-salad sandwiches ($11) and crabcake sandos made from a mix of real and artificial crab that’s deep-fried ($13). Summer rolls have a variety of fillings including shrimp, tofu, grilled chicken, garden salad and “fancy pork” ($9-$12).
The drinks include cold Vietnamese coffee, peach tea, Che Thai — sort of like a green, sweet Vietnamese dessert soup with jelly cubes — and wellness shots of fresh-pressed carrot, orange, ginger and lemon.
The hot dishes take about 5 minutes to prepare and can be called in ahead or simply ordered at the counter. On offer at the moment are imperial rolls ($9), chicken wings ($12), garlic noodles ($11) and a fried banana ($5).
The restaurant is in its soft opening phase and may tweak its hours and menu in the coming months. The larger dishes are the staples, for instance, but there soon might be Asian-style soups.
Details: Soft-opening hours are 11 a.m.-7 p.m. daily at 4060 Piedmont Ave., Oakland; 510-907-3112, instagram.com/monsuperette.
