Sunnyvale native in lead for seat on college district board

Trustee elections

Early election returns showed Sunnyvale native Paul Fong leading the race for the trustee area 2 seat on the West Valley-Mission Community College District board. Trustee area 2 covers parts of Sunnyvale and Santa Clara. Fong had 54.98% of the vote, compared to Robert T. ‘Bob’ Owens’ 45.02%.

Fong, a former state Assembly member, and his wife Grace own the Flower Cottage in Sunnyvale.

The trustee area 2 seat was one of three on the district’s board up for grabs in the Nov. 5 election. Adrienne Grey had a comfortable lead over Rebecca Wong in trustee area 6, which encompasses part of Campbell and San Jose’s Cambrian neighborhood. Diane Lamkin was ahead of Mary-Lynne Bernald for short-term seat for trustee area 5, which covers Saratoga.

Top 10 income

Sunnyvale had the second highest median income among the six Bay Area cities ranked in the top 10 of a recent survey.

SmartAsset ranked 636 U.S. cities based on the percentage change in median household income from the end of 2022 to the end of 2023. Sunnyvale came in at No. 4 with a median income of $189,443 in 2023, up from $169,781 the previous year for an 11.58% increase. The percentage of Sunnyvale households earning $100,000 or more went up from 68.8% in 2022 to 74.2% in 2023. The percentage of households earning $200,000 or more also jumped, from 43.7% in 2022 to 48.6% in 2023.

San Ramon was No. 2 in the rankings, followed by Palo Alto, Mountain View and Milpitas at Nos. 6-8, respectively, and Pleasanton at No. 9. The top 10 was bookended by cities in Washington, with Sammamish at No. 1 and Redmond at No. 10.
