Steel pipes tumble off semi, injuring two on Kennedy in West Loop

Two people were injured after steel pipes fell off of a semi-trailer and onto the Kennedy Expressway Tuesday night on the Near West Side.

The semi was traveling in the northbound lanes on the Kennedy near Lake Street when it made contact with the Lake Street bridge around 11 p.m., causing some of the pipes to fall onto the roadway, Illinois State Police said.

The pipes hit a 2017 Toyota Camry and 2020 Toyota Corolla and two people were taken to area hospitals with injuries not considered life-threatening, state police said.

Lanes reopened around 11:35 p.m. after the pipes were moved to the shoulder of the road, officials said. Crews remained on scene Wednesday morning, removing the pipes.
